How to Treat Yourself on Valentine’s Day

Are you the independent type? Does Valentine’s Day with self-care and pampering sound tempting? Or are you ready for a girl’s night out? If so, here are some alternative activities for those journeying solo (because singles should never have to dread Valentine’s Day!).

Loving yourself well and the concept of self-care for Valentine’s Day has caught the attention of many singles! And with it comes plenty of ideas for the day of love; here are a few we recommend:

Galentine’s Day

Have you hung out with your girl gang on Valentine’s Day? If you’ve never experienced a Galentine’s Day (a day with your best gals), you should set an eventful day up with your girlfriends ASAP!

Galentine’s Day is a holiday that was created by Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) on the comedic show, Parks and Recreation. It’s always held on February 13th, a day before Valentine’s Day so that both taken and single women friend’s can spend a girl’s night out (or in!).

Although Galentine’s Day first appeared on a fictional show, it took off in the real world as an actual day to celebrate friendships (give me one reason why a holiday like that shouldn’t go down!).

The holiday can be anything from a chill day to bond with the gals at one another’s house, a slumber party, a night out, or even something empowering like giving each other powerful feminist books as gifts.

It’s certainly popular and creative enough to do a quick Google search for ideas on how to celebrate. Like, you can literally throw anything together and still have a great time! It’s not about the money spent, it’s about reigniting and reminding us of the powerful female bonds in our lives!

Pssst! And if your whole friend group is single, why not just celebrate it on Valentine’s Day?!

Take Artistic Self-Portraits

Spend some time at home taking artistic self-portraits of yourself. Shake up the usual selfie by experimenting with styles, outfits, makeup looks you wouldn’t normally do, and find creative ways to prop up your phone and pose “candidly.” Or even invest in a selfie stick to get more unique angles without your outstretched arm intruding the shot.

Spa Day (at Home)

Everything listed from now on could be used for your Galentine’s Day celebration or can be ideas for you if you’re legitimately riding solo during the holiday of love.

And one way to (inexpensively) enjoy the day is to have a spa day at home! You can avoid all the mushy couples and just the rush of the public during this time by staying indoors, stress-free and pampered.

Check out some of these at-home spa day ideas, make a list to pick up what you need, and have fun relaxing!

  • Take a bath.
  • Take a shower with the lights off (and just candles lighting your night… and maybe some music!).
  • Face mask with your favorite brand.
  • Get your favorite movie(s) ready!
  • Cozy up with a good book.
  • Light a candle, incense, and/or run a diffuser.
  • Dry brush.
  • Throw on a sheet mask and/or exfoliate.
  • Paint your nails.
  • Buy what you need to create something like a cheese plate or any other dish and/or dessert that makes you feel good and fancy!
  • Not too big on food-assembly or cooking? Treat yo’self and order dinner and dessert (early!) to go and indulge at home.

Spa Day at an Actual Spa

Pretty self-explanatory! Book yourself an appointment for whatever you’re feeling: a massage, facial, sauna, pedicure… whatever your heart desires!

Get Your Makeup Done at a Kiosk

Feel great for the day and get your makeup done! See if you discover a new favorite lipstick or blush that can make you feel good every day.

Journal

If you’re the more sentimental type, why not process your emotions on  Valentine’s Day by journaling through them? If you’re feeling thankful, list your reasons! If you’re feeling extra salty on this day of “love”, figure out what makes you tick. Was it an ex-boyfriend? Painful memories? What makes you so upset toward the holiday?? Get really deep and honest about your feelings. A little introversion never hurt anybody, and this could be a good way to recenter through your emotions and examine your desires and goals from the start of 2018!

Work it Out

Valentine’s Day yoga, anyone? Meditating through a session might help clear your mind, heart, and soul. Getting ready to work out can usually be grueling, but almost always a satisfying experience once you’ve followed through.

Check if there are any interesting classes running on Valentine’s Day in your neighborhood, or just skim some workout videos on YouTube and create a playlist beforehand!

Get Creative with Some Art

Getting messy can often times be therapeutic, so why not take a class in the art world that piques your interest. You can even go to an art supply store and buy a cheap set of paints to play around with. The main point is to have fun and let go. 🙂

Valentine’s Day is just a Hallmark holiday, yes, but to get through it we need to change our perspective of it: make it a day where you celebrate love.

Even if it’s self-love or a reminder to appreciate the loving friendships around you. <3
